The Mundane and the Curious

Today my Mom has the babies. For the past few weeks she has been taking them to her apartment in the Brewery District on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's a little slice of urban exposure for my Charlie and Liv. And a little slice of quiet time for me. It has definitely been helpful so far. I'm not sure how I would go grocery shopping and clean the house if it weren't for these two days a week. The babies are awake more, limiting my free time. However, today is the first day I needed a break for emotional reasons. After the past two days of almost constant crying from someone, my nerves are little shot. Love them, love them, love them...but I need a moment away. Funnily enough, I am completely confident that by the end of the day I will be so happy to have them back home. But for now I am enjoying my alone time, and feeling so thankful that I can leave my children with someone who loves them as much as I do, and is truly enjoying her time with them. Thank you Mom!

So today I am attacking the mountains of laundry that have accumulated...over the past TWO days. And that's just the baby stuff. Poor Charlie has gone to town with the spitting-up these past few days, thereby generating a load of laundry a day. We can't keep the burp cloths and bibs stocked. And we don't have a small supply. Meanwhile, I will do a little cleaning around the house.

It's not a grocery shopping day today. Every two weeks I go to the store and this is really working well for us. I have finally made a meal calendar for the month (taken mostly from the A Year of Crock Potting blog), and then I know exactly what I need to buy at the store. This has saved us quite a lot of money already (through the babies gorceries have NOT), and makes dinner preparation much easier. And it adds a lot of variety to my normal dishes. I don't have a very wide repertoire, I must admit. Right now I have fajitas cooking in the crockpot and they are just beginning to smell completely delicious. Lunch time I think...

On another note. A strange thing has been happening. We have this touch lamp in our bedroom that sits on the night stand on my side of the bed. We got it when we first got married and have always had it on our night stand. It has never acted up or done anything funny. It does now. Over the past three days, I have walked into the bedroom on three occasions and found the lamp on. The first couple times I figured that maybe I had turned it on when I got out of bed in the morning and not realized it. Then last night, I was lying in bed (my body not ANYWHERE near the touch lamp), and Eli was going to turn on the floor lamp in our room so we could read the scriptures. As he was reaching for the floor lamp, the touch lamp turned on! Like I said, I was nowhere near enough to touch it. So I took a peak and there wasn't anything near it. It couldn't hve been bumped. Weird, we both said. Read the scriptures and went to bed. Then this morning I woke up. Got the babies ready to go, and helped carry them outside to my Mom's car (we have to walk through the bedroom to go outside). The lamp was not on. When I walked back into the room...you guessed it. The lamp was on. So I went over to take a peak. Still nothing touching it. I checked the extension cord it was plugged into, and it was firmly in place. I checked to make sure the extension cord was plugged into the wall well. It was. Again, very firmly in place. So now I am stumped. Any suggestions? Very curious indeed.

Oh! I'm all-too-familiar with non-stop crying. And you can vent... you almost need to. And it doesn't mean you don't love 'em, but it's just so frustrating and taxing when they cry like that. I'm not sure why babies do that: colicky, over-tired, growing pains? What I DO know is that they will out-grow it. Thank God. Hope they out-grow it soon!

The light. Brian would probably say it's some weird static electricity issue in your bedroom. I think it's your dad telling you he's in the light, but that he's still with you. Not like living in your bedroom's touch lamp, but in Heaven. That's my feeling.

I like that Sarah. I must admit, that thought had occurred to me. :)

I'm so pleased you get those couple of days to reconnoiter...they are essential...props to the nance!!!

Moms are hard-wired to respond with a skosh of anxiety to their infants' cries-that's what keeps the species alive, if you will...so yea! You're sorta programmed to be stressed with constant crying...it has NOTHING to do with love, lack of or anything like it, it's all about doing whatever it takes to make it stop and make the baby happy & healthy..that's why you're so happy to see him at the end of the day...because you're so gooey in love with the little feller...

Is there anyway I can view your menu?...I totally need a menu and I would be very interested in looking at yours....pretty please?

The light...I'm assuming that you and Eli have tried to replicate the turning on/turning off scenario? The static electricity makes sense...if you can't explain it and it makes you feel good...well...you know how I feel about those things.... ;) light = love

i don't know how to explain the light and seeing as how i don't, i'm gonna go with sarah's interpretation. because i like that one. :)

i hope i didn't ruin your lovely respite too much, ab! (i had to call ab and have her run down to my place and re-stock me with clothes - charlie had spit up on everything i owned and was down to just a diaper! a little chilly here in ohio for that!)

Hey, I think our touch lamp is doing that too! I was chalking it up to frazzled mother brain but maybe...

I know what you mean about the crying. I'm glad you're Mom is able to be there to help out so you can get a little break.

As for the lamp it could be a short circuit inside the lamp, but I like to think it's your Dad too.

That's a good one, Abby. It sits on a nightstand? I know Yuki touches ours occasionally when she's playing by the bed or goes under it but if it's ON something...

I need to learn the ways of your calendar menu. Once I'm "retired" I'll need to start preparing proper meals, I think Jake might appreciate that. Any knowledge you'd like to share?
